Canada batted first in the World Cup opener and scored 194 runs despite losing five wickets in the first inning. Navneet Dhaliwal scored 61 runs off 44 deliveries, including six fours and three sixes. Nicholas Kirton scored 51 from 31 deliveries, including three fours and two sixes.
In response, the co-hosts, easily chased the target in 17.4 overs, thanks to match-winning performances by Aaron Jones (94 runs from 40 deliveries) and Andries Gous (65 runs from 46 deliveries).
The USA’s next target is to secure a win against Pakistan at the same site on Thursday, June 6. Canada, on the other hand, will aim for their first points when they face Ireland on Friday at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
