On Saturday, the Senate Standing Committee on Finance held a meeting, which was chaired by Senator Saleem Mandviwala.
The committee has rejected the 18% sales tax imposed on mobile phones up to $200 (approximately 56,000 rupees) in the annual budget.
Committee member Anusha Rehman argued that mobile phones are the need of the day. By imposing such taxes, mobiles become unaffordable for the underprivileged sector of the country.
She further said that there are already various taxes on mobile services, calls, and bills.
She protested that the Federal Government is putting too much burden on the poor for International Monitoring Funds (IMF).
She also condemned the harsh policies of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), which have driven investors away from Pakistan.
