On Tuesday, during the meeting of the National Assembly, the Minister of Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurengzeb, suggested providing an opportunity for non-filers to explain their position before imposing the travel ban.
He further said that FBR should thoroughly check the history of non-filers to determine whether the person is habitually delaying filing his tax returns. If the person did not file his tax returns within the duration given by FBR, that person will be fined double the amount.
He also explained that according to Section 116 of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001, the taxpayer has to provide the statement of foreign assets and the assets of the spouse if the spouse depends on the taxpayer.
According to the finance minister, the proposal of putting a ban on non-filers from traveling broadly is a move to pressurize the person for prompt payment of taxes.
