In an astonishing change of events, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued an order to the government, requesting that the ministers’ petrol quota be lifted. The government is expected to reduce federal ministers’ and other cabinet members’ petrol-related expenditures.
Sources said the government spends an average of Rs. 2-5.3 million monthly on petrol for cabinet members. A minister spends an average of Rs. 98,000 per month on petrol for a small car of 1500 cc.
Cabinet members are allowed 350 liters of petrol per month on up to 1500 cc vehicles whereas members with land cruisers, BMW, and Jeep get 900 liters of petrol per month.
Earlier, the cabinet members were availing of 580 liters of petrol per month on up to 1500 cc vehicles and 1500 liters per month on vehicles such as the Land Cruiser, BMW, and Jeep.
As the government deliberates its response to the IMF’s directive, the outcome will shape not only ministerial fuel allowances but also perceptions of accountability and transparency in governance.
