Public holiday on Wednesday, 1st May has been declared by Sindh government in honour of Labour’s. Government offices, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils under the administrative control of the Sindh government will receive this public holiday.
Right of Workers in Sindh
This public holiday is a celebration of recognizing the rights and struggles of workers and the labour movement. The main reason behind this holiday is the Hypermarket incident which took place at China in 1886, in which approx 40 – 80 labour’s were killed. Today, Labour Day serves as a reminder of the importance of fair wages, safe working conditions, and workers’ rights.
Impact of this Holiday
The public holiday on May 1st will provide a welcome respite for workers in Sindh. Businesses and organizations in the non-essential service sectors are likely to be closed or have adjusted operating hours. Residents of Sindh can expect busier public spaces and increased traffic on the day.
